    CLINICAL DENTAL HYGIENE:
New Research - New Challenges
Changes and scientific advances provide dental hygienists with new levels of insight into patient needs and offer more options in the selection of patient care plans. Once a patient care plan is outlined, interventions can be implemented to prevent recurrence of infection. With new research there are new challenges!

Join Esther Wilkins and Anna Pattison for this exciting day of learning!

Presenting TEN of the most provocative and interesting topics
in clinical dental hygiene today:

1.
Risk factors for periodontal infection.

2. Dental caries: stages, early detection (sharp eyes & dull explorers), Demineralization>><<Remineralization

3. Treating dental caries and periodontal diseases as infections.

4. A bird's eye view of the new classification system for periodontal and gingival diseases and conditions.

5. The Biofilm Story: Where are the pathogens?

6. Periodontal debridement or root planing - what are the latest concepts on calculus removal?

7. New technologies - the dental endoscope, DetecTar calculus detection probe, lasers and future developments.

8. New instruments for advanced periodontal instrumentation- mini-bladed curets, furcation curets, diamond coated files, new Piezo and magnetostrictive tips.

9. Videotapes comparing hand and ultrasonic instrumentation.

10.
Innovative new operator positions and fulcrums for optimum access and adaptation to root morphology.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

•  Describe at least two major changes in the AAP Periodontal Disease Classification System.
•  Explain the transmissibility of periodontal and cariogenic bacteria.
•  Describe the characteristics of biofilm.
•  Describe the proper technique for clinical examination of incipient caries.
•  Describe the best methods for remineralization of early caries.
•  Describe the characteristics of the dental endoscope and the calculus detection probe.
•  Recognize the design, indications and sequence for use of universal curets, Gracey curets, mini-bladed Gracey curets, furcation curets and diamond coated instruments.
•  Describe the differences between magnetostrictive and piezoelectric ultrasonic devices.
•  Describe at least two of the newest types of ultrasonic tips.
•  Recognize the indications for extraoral or opposite arch fulcrums.
