The Periodontal Pocket:
Treat or Refer?

Do you want your dental practice to treat more periodontal disease by improving diagnostic procedures and motivating recalcitrant patients to accept treatment? Do you want to know how you can increase the amount of crown and bridge, implant, and esthetic dentistry performed in your office by collaborating with a periodontist?

This course will show how to do both. It will also teach you how to improve your treatment results with challenging periodontal patients as well as how to avoid the risks of disease progression, bone and tooth loss, and treatment failure. Our guest speaker, Dr. John Sottosanti, is a gifted clinician/teacher who is well known for his integration of scientific and clinical advances into his practice and teaching programs. He will share with you the subtleties of a correct diagnosis and treatment plan as well as the best therapy, non-surgical or surgical, to control the disease and restore optimal periodontal health.

   Learning Objectives:

Learn the seven key steps in treating the advanced periodontal case
Learn how referral to a periodontist can result in patients desiring advanced restorative care
Describe the best ways to motivate patients to improve their oral health and appreciate the need for periodontal and restorative dentistry
Learn how a full arch fixed provisional restoration in the advanced periodontal patient can allow for determination of which teeth can be saved long term, which should be extracted, and where implants should be placed
Recognize the five patient personality types allowing you to interact successfully with all patients during challenging case presentations
Understand the difference between chronic adult periodontitis and generalized aggressive periodontitis and how the treatment plan needs to be altered for each type
Learn how to regenerate lost bone in an extraction socket devastated by advanced periodontal disease, creating a site for future implant placement and preserving esthetics
List the 18 risk factors that may be responsible for post-treatment disease progression
Identify when gingival and connective tissue grafts are needed to prevent further recession in high risk situations
Understand why the presence, absence and type of calculus can determine the proper treatment approach, instrumentation and restorative plan
Learn the six ways to assess periodontal treatment effectiveness
Learn how to avoid medico-legal situations related to periodontal disease and its treatment

General dentists and dental team members will benefit from this comprehensive periodontal continuing education program.
