Course Description
Dr. Stanley Malamed reviews the universal emergency management algorithm (PABCD)—Position, Airway, Breathing, Circulation, and Definitive Care—as the foundation for responding to medical emergencies in the dental office. He explains how proper patient positioning, maintaining an open airway with the head tilt–chin lift technique, assessing breathing and circulation, and providing appropriate treatment can save lives in virtually any emergency. The presentation focuses on syncope (fainting), the most common medical emergency in dentistry, discussing its causes, prevention through proper patient positioning during injections, and step-by-step management. Dr. Malamed also covers current recommendations for post-syncope care, emphasizes the importance of identifying the underlying cause to prevent future episodes, and highlights key updates to emergency preparedness based on current guidelines.
Topics
- Apply the PABCD algorithm to manage medical emergencies in the dental office
- Position patients appropriately based on their level of consciousness and medical condition
- Assess and maintain the airway, breathing, and circulation during an emergency
